School Safety & Emergency Response
The safety and security of every NUSD student and staff member is our top priority. Our schools maintain emergency response plans, train staff, conduct regular safety drills, and work closely with local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency agencies.

During an Emergency

What Families Should Do
When an emergency occurs, NUSD will provide information as quickly and frequently as possible. Please help us keep students safe by:

Watch for district communication. Check your phone, text messages, email, Parent Portal, district website, and official social media for updates.
Do not call the school during an active emergency. Phone lines and staff need to remain available for emergency response.
Do not come to campus unless instructed. Keeping roads, entrances, and parking areas clear allows first responders to access the school.
Follow reunification instructions. If students are relocated or released through a controlled process, families will be told when and where to respond.
Keep your contact information current. Students will only be released to an authorized parent/guardian or emergency contact.
Bring photo identification if you are directed to a reunification location.

Know the Response
LOCKDOWN
Used when there may be an immediate threat on or near campus. Students and staff remain secured inside rooms, doors and windows are secured, and activities stop until the situation is resolved.

MODIFIED LOCKDOWN
Used when there may be a danger outside the buildings or off campus. Exterior doors remain locked while instruction generally continues inside. Movement may occur within the building when appropriate.

EVACUATION
Used when conditions inside a building may be unsafe, such as fire, loss of utilities, or another hazard. Students and staff move to designated locations. If an off-site evacuation is necessary, NUSD will communicate reunification information to families.

SHELTER IN PLACE
Used when it is safer to remain inside, such as during severe weather, flooding, fire, nearby police activity, or another external concern. Instruction may continue while movement is limited as necessary.

Reunification
Some emergencies may require students to be moved to another location or released through a controlled reunification process. If reunification is necessary, NUSD will tell families when and where to pick up their child. Please do not report to the school or another location until you receive instructions. Students will only be released to an authorized parent/guardian or emergency contact listed in the Student Information System. A government-issued photo ID will be required.

Safety Updates
Not every safety concern requires an emergency response. NUSD may issue a Safety Update when something occurs on or near a campus that does not rise to the level of an emergency, but families should be aware of it. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.

Help Us Be Prepared
Families can help by keeping phone numbers, email addresses, and emergency contacts current and talking with children about following staff and first-responder directions during an emergency.
